A Triple Bill Evening of Innovative Contemporary Ballet

Step into an electrifying evening of dance featuring the 10 Dancer Ensemble of Ballet Edmonton in three bold new works by Canadian rising star choreographers Kirsten Wicklund, Ethan Colangelo, and Béatrice Larrivée. This triple bill offers a powerful blend of physical risk, emotional depth, and choreographic innovation, showcasing the future of contemporary ballet in Canada.

Each artist brings a distinct choreographic voice to the stage. Wicklund’s work pulses with urgency and intuition, blending virtuosic ballet technique with raw contemporary energy. Colangelo, growing in international acclaim and known for a visceral movement language, offers a work that is both poetic and explosively physical. Larrivée draws from her Canadian roots combined with her time with Batsheva Dance Company to craft a piece delving into instinct, intensity, and groove.

All three creations feature original sound design elements, expanding the sensory experience and deepening the atmosphere of each world. Expect powerful human architecture, immersive soundscapes, and movement that redefines what ballet can be.

This evening is a celebration of risk-taking, innovation, and the next wave of Canadian choreographic excellence. Whether you are a dance lover or a curious newcomer, this program promises an unforgettable journey into the edge of contemporary performance.

Program Details

String Theory - Béatrice Larrivée

String Theory invites us to sense the invisible patterns that hold everything together. The piece unfolds into a vast world where vibrating strings emerge, shaping us and generating powerful forces which we navigate not as individuals, but through our shared molecular connectivity. The dancers move beyond a horizon where language dissolves into the tension between control and rupture, inviting both fearlessness and surrender. In these infinite vibrations, we are pulled and pushed, unified in the breadth of our reactivity and the depth of our receptivity.

Night Breath - Ethan Colangelo

This process began as an exploration of sensation and tasks with the beautiful dancers of Ballet Edmonton.

My work is not driven by narrative, it explores ideas and concepts: meditation versus chaos, ecstasy versus anxiety. I wanted to create a visual landscape where these ideas meet and pull apart and create a dream-like state that allows the audience to find places of connection and relatability so they come with us on this journey. Having the composer Ben Waters be part of the process has been such a gift. It allowed the music to be built with detail in real-time as the piece was being constructed.

I am so happy to create in a place with so much openness, curiosity and generosity.

Hush Hush - Kirsten Wicklund

  • I came a long way. I came a very very long way.
  • I contemplate my essence.
  • I move - I am real.
  • I came to see you.
  • Sightlines clear.
  • Nothing but vivid green - my wildest fern.

  • I ran for a long time. I ran for a very very very long time.
  • I see a wet earth, upturned
  • I sink beneath.
  • I ran to meet you.
  • A Grove…

  • Did you see me when I ran?
  • How far and how fast I went.
  • This weeping which strays me.
  • Hush now, hush.
